Fridges in the years prior to electricity, were essentially tight-seal containers in which a block of ice would be inserted and replaced every couple days.
Thus a new job was created, the ice delivery-man. The city's ice was stored in a big cavern in the mountain of Partnitha in the north of Athens and it had to be delivered to peoples houses. The ice delivery-man would bring the ice, carve it to fit the shape of the individual fridge and then made sure that they never run out.
