There are many theories in reagrds to the origin of the name "ouzo". The one that bears more truth has to do with trading and shipping between Greece and France and especially Marseille which happens to be a Greek colony.
On the crates that were routed to Marseille, there would be an inscription -"uso di Massalia" -"for use in Marseille".
Furthermore, in Marseille one can find a very similar beverage to ouzo which is called pastis and is also traditionally consumed with a small apetizer called "mize" -you know, like meze.
Too many coincedences...
